Back for its 13th year, Golden State’s premiere camping, arts, music, and yoga festival, Lightning in a Bottle, returns to central California May 23 – 28, announcing a world-class musical gathering that exudes the playfully aware ethos cultivated by festival founders, the Do LaB.
Host to several of the most intricately-built and aesthetically stunning stages in the world, and arguably the most compelling display of large-scale art outside of Burning Man – Lightning in a Bottle 2018 will showcase an incredible roster of global musical acts, artists, and installations, totaling over 300 in number.
Headlining this year is the new school’s ultimate funk master Anderson .Paak & The Free Nationals, and the man of mystery himself, ZHU, the Chinese-American electronic musician and singer who has made a name for himself by staying out of the spotlight. Griz, will light up the dancefloor with his horns, funk and upbeat grooves. Fever Ray will make things weird and otherworldly. The Glitch Mob will turn noise into magic, and Modeselektor will hop on the decks for a unique DJ set, which we have heard is worth the attendance!
Performances from Tipper, Emancipator, Nicole Moudaber, MK, Yotto, Sofi Tukker, Tune-Yards, Nao, Beats Antique, Tokimonsta, Giraffage and more round out the bill. We are particularly thrilled to see The Black Madonna, MixMag’s DJ of the year in 2016, taking her spot at a big festival. Louise Bradley in an article for MixMag summed her up like this … “Triangulating the sweet spot between techno, disco, and house, Marea draws from a font of 50 years of dance music – and its original messages of unity and radicalism – to create a tonic for the present.” We could not agree more. Don’t miss her set.
“For us the goal is to craft a musical playlist that will perfectly guide people along the experience we’re trying to create,” the Do LaB’s music director and co-founder Jesse Flemming states in a press release. “We book each stage to be its own separate journey on any given day and we try to diversify it as much as possible so when you’re wandering around during the weekend you can always find something just right for you. This has been our goal since day one and it continues to shape how we book today.”
At the epicenter of the grounds, designed and called ‘The Compass’, lies the true essence of Lightning in a Bottle where visionary art, healing arts, self-awareness, and education collide to deepen revelers’ connections with one another: a magic that lasts long after the festival has ended. Enriching the mind and body with visionary talks, world-class yogis, and a plethora of life-changing workshops.
A stroll to The Village leads participants to an interactive, intergenerational and education-based environment focused on creating a sustainable, thriving interdependent community that honors the elements, ancestors, and the cycles of the natural world.
Immersive environments, such as the famed Grand Artique, Jive Joint, or Amori’s Casino & Burlesque spring to life with collaborative art installations and fun, sultry entertainment. Look for additional lineup releases and announcements for these extraordinary places in the coming months!
Further distinguished from its contemporaries as the most environmentally conscious festival in America, LIB has received A Greener Festival’s Outstanding Award six years running for its healthy food vendors, free water stations, composting and recycling infrastructure, a “Leave No Trace” policy and other green initiatives that continue to grow year after year.
